Web version of Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)’s password killing tool, Digits was released to the developers on Wednesday. Twitter Fabric, which was unveiled during Flight Developer Conference last year, is a new suite of tools for developers, and Digits is a part of it. With Digit it becomes easier to sign up for new apps with mobile phone numbers replacing the passwords.

How it works?

With the new feature all the services and apps in the ecosystem can be accessed by the user with just logging in on the web. The iOS and Android developers already had access to Digits, but after it became available on the web through Digits SDK it is now possible for the developers to make use of the Digits to link their mobile apps and websites.

“Digits login for web gives your users a powerful, single-log-in experience that also increases the conversion rate for your logins,” said a blog post from Twitter.

If any user is logged into a mobile app with his phone number, then with Digits he or she will notice a similar prompt on the accompanying website. The users will be required to confirm their phone number once via SMS, when they login to a site using Digit for the first time.

The users won’t be required to repeat the login process for any of the website that is Digits-enabled once they complete the initial step specified above.

Twitter targeting emerging markets

The users face trouble when they are required to make a new account and password for availing each of the different services. Therefore, it has become important that the friction at signup be reduced so that the developers are able to keep users on their service for longer.

There are many smartphone users in the emerging markets, who don’t have any access to a PC, and Twitter believes that this tool would be very beneficial to those users. In a blog post, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) said that the conversion rate of any website gets reduced if there are passwords or other extra steps in the login process.
