Is There a Better Way to Hike a Mountain?
This article is about a hike I did with my daughter. It is not a top 10 list, but a guide to help you to decide whether you want to do this hike or not. .The hike is rated fairly easy and open to all ages. I would caution you to be careful if you do not know what your body can handle. Parents should decide this for their children based upon the age they are at, but also the child’s experience hiking without a parent. Some of these hikes are more challenging than others due to trail conditions and steep grade/dropoffs on some sections. This hike has a couple of very steep sections that I suggest turning back before reaching the top if their is no where else to turn back. (Recommendations on these turns have been added below) Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington, which is about a 3-4 hour drive from Portland, has several major hiking trails and Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon has many beautiful hikes including the Cascade Loop Trail which is another great choice for a day hike with kids. The park website says that there are three different loops that you can take:1) The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT): this trail starts near White Pass and follows the Continental Divide through Glacier Bay National Park and into Mt. Olympus where you go around to Mount Adams (the highest point in Washington) before returning back to your car.(PCT): this trail starts near White Pass and follows the Continental Divide through Glacier Bay National Park and into Mt. Olympus where you go around to Mount Adams (the highest point in Washington) before returning back to your car. Pacific Crest Trail: this is just a quick jaunt on the PCT from Mt. Thurston to Mooselookmeguntic Lake along a scenic route that crosses the Cascade Mountains and then goes up into Canada for about 200 miles through Skagit, Olympic, Kings Canyon, Idyllwild, etc., ending in Portland.
